Treating SIBO:

SIBO does not go away on its own nor can antibiotics and prescription medication properly treat it. While some antibiotics will kill the bad bacteria, they are also killing the good bacteria, compounding the problem. Antibiotics are harsh on the intestinal lining, contributing to increased microscopic tears throughout the small and large intestine, thus increasing the symptoms you are currently experiencing. When treating SIBO, it is important to not only kill the harmful bacteria but to also heal the intestinal lining.

A SIBO protocol is quite involved and takes active effort on your part.

To help you achieve optimal gut health, we must focus on two main goals:

1. The first step is a dietary change, you must stop feeding the bad bacteria. I will instruct you to follow a specific version of the low FODMAP diet for a minimum of two weeks, followed by a specific anti-inflammatory diet.

2. You must also take these targeted supplements in a specified order to help eradicate the bad bacteria, re-inoculate good bacteria, and repair both the small and large intestines.

In the case of SIBO, you should not expect to correct the issue by following only one of the 2 guidelines, both a change in diet, as well as proper supplementation, is necessary.

You should expect to follow the protocol from anywhere between 30-90 days, depending on the severity. You should also expect to stay on an extended maintenance program. Additionally, healthy lifestyle changes are necessary to prevent re-occurrence.

What is SIBO?

SIBO is an acronym for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. Millions of Americans are suffering from their chronic, yet treatable, condition. The small intestine is the largest part of the digestive tract and is responsible for the proper digestion of your food and nutrients. Small amounts of commensal bacterial can live harmoniously in the small intestine, but if the bad bacteria, it leaves your gut health and overall health in destress.

What are the dangers of SIBO?
The biggest danger you face is malnutrition. When the bad bacteria have overtaken your small intestine, it becomes near impossible to properly digest and assimilate nutrients. It is common for SIBO patients to test low in iron, calcium, vitamins A, D E, and K, as well as B12. The bacteria not only block the absorption of nutrients but also selfishly feeds off of your dietary intake, consuming the nutrients for their own benefit. This is exacerbated by certain foods, especially sugar and simple carbohydrates. As the bacteria strengthens, your body weakens and you experience unpleasant symptoms.

The longer SIBO is left untreated, the more severe the symptoms. If this bad bacterial is not irradiated through proper supplementation and diet, it will continue to exacerbate, leading to sometimes unrepairable damage of the small intestine.

Symptoms and diagnosis of SIBO:
The list of symptoms is lengthily and does not just include GI discomfort, here are a few common SIBO symptoms:
• Nausea/ Vomiting
• Bloating/ Abdominal Cramping
• Unintentional Weight Loss
• Diarrhea Joint Pain
• Fatigue
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Skin Conditions such as acne, eczema, rashes & rosacea

SIBO can be identified through DNA stool testing such as the Gut Zoomer as well as thought breath testing. I am not a fan of breath testing due to the high sugar diet that is required for 2 weeks in order to get accurate results. You can test to get affirmative answers or if SIBO is simply suspected, you can dive right into the SIBO protocol.
